General Mattress Care

All Pro-Motion mattresses are designed for long-term use with minimal maintenance. However, a few simple habits will significantly extend the life of your mattress and maintain its hygienic condition. The most important step you can take from day one is to use a good quality mattress protector. A breathable, waterproof protector prevents moisture, skin cells, and allergens from penetrating the mattress core, which in turn protects the foam and spring layers from premature degradation and keeps the sleep surface hygienic.

During the first few weeks of use, your mattress will settle and conform to your body shape. This is entirely normal and does not indicate a fault. You may notice a slight softening in the areas where you sleep most — this is the comfort layers responding to your weight and warmth. Some initial off-gassing odour from new foam mattresses is also normal and will dissipate within 24 to 48 hours of unpacking. Airing the mattress in a well-ventilated room before use will speed this process.

Avoid sitting repeatedly on the edge of the mattress in the same spot, as this can compress the foam or spring border over time and reduce the structural integrity of the edge support. When getting in and out of bed, try to vary the point of contact rather than always using the same corner. This is particularly relevant for adjustable base users, where the articulation already places repeated stress on specific zones of the mattress.

Ensure adequate ventilation in your bedroom to reduce moisture build-up beneath and within the mattress. If possible, fold back the duvet for 20 to 30 minutes each morning before making the bed, allowing body moisture to evaporate from the mattress surface. Do not store items under the bed in a way that restricts airflow beneath the base, as this can lead to condensation and mould growth in humid conditions.

  • Use a mattress protector from the first night
  • Avoid jumping or standing on the mattress
  • Ensure adequate ventilation in your bedroom to reduce moisture build-up
  • Do not fold or bend the mattress during storage or transport
  • Air the mattress for 20 to 30 minutes each morning before making the bed

Rotating and Turning

Rotating your mattress regularly distributes wear evenly and prevents body impressions from forming in one area.

01

Memory Foam and Gel Foam Mattresses

Rotate 180 degrees (head to foot) every 3 months for the first year, then every 6 months thereafter. Do not flip — these mattresses are single-sided with a specific comfort layer on top.

02

Pocket Spring and Hybrid Mattresses

Rotate 180 degrees every 3 months for the first year, then every 6 months. The Posture Core and Hybrid Pro are also single-sided and should not be flipped.

03

Adjustable Base Use

When used on an adjustable base, rotation is still recommended but may be less critical as the articulation naturally distributes pressure across different zones. Follow the same schedule as above.

Cleaning Your Mattress Cover

All Pro-Motion mattresses have removable covers. Refer to the care label on your specific mattress, but the following guidelines apply to most models in our range.

Memory Foam and Gel Foam Covers

Machine wash at 40 degrees C on a gentle cycle. Do not tumble dry — lay flat or hang to air dry. Do not iron or dry clean.

Ultra Firm Orthopaedic Cover

Machine wash at 60 degrees C for enhanced hygiene. Suitable for users with allergies or in assisted-living environments. Air dry only.

Pocket Spring (Posture Core) Cover

Dry clean only. Do not machine wash the tufted damask cover. Spot clean surface marks with a damp cloth and mild detergent.

Spot Cleaning the Foam Core

If the foam core becomes soiled, spot clean with a damp cloth and a small amount of mild upholstery cleaner. Do not saturate the foam with water. Allow to dry completely before replacing the cover.

Mattress Care FAQs

No — all Pro-Motion mattresses are flex-rated for use with our adjustable bases. The foam and spring constructions are specifically designed to articulate without delaminating, creasing, or losing structural integrity over time.

Signs that a mattress needs replacing include visible sagging or body impressions deeper than 2 to 3 cm, loss of support leading to back or joint pain, persistent odour that does not respond to airing, or cover damage that cannot be repaired. Contact us if you are unsure — our team can advise on whether a replacement is warranted under your guarantee.

A good quality, thin mattress protector will have minimal impact on the feel of the mattress. We recommend a breathable, waterproof protector that fits snugly without bunching. Avoid thick padded toppers on orthopaedic mattresses as these can reduce the clinical support benefit.

Electric blankets can be used on top of the mattress cover in the normal way. Do not place an electric blanket between the mattress and the cover, and do not use an electric blanket with a memory foam mattress topper as this may affect the foam's temperature-sensitive properties.
